READ’S Involment in the disaster hit regions
RELIEF PHASE

The devastating effect of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake severely disrupted education and badly damaged the basic social service infrastructure in the Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK) region. Not only homes were lost, but families were demolished, schools were destroyed, children within the schools were killed, and basic life routines were suddenly disturbed. The impact of this trauma was emotional and mental distress along with grief of loss. READ’s involvement in the AJK region for the past 12 years enabled the foundation to respond efficiently and effectively following the catastrophe.
READ’s goal was to help the community and the children to recommence their basic life routines as early as possible in hopes of eliminating further mental distress. Thus, education in some areas resumed in just 2 weeks after the earthquake and 23,000 children were learning again in the READ schools.
READ schools during the Relief phase were “schools without walls” functioning primarily in the open, some with in tents, and some were pre-fabricated classrooms (which were available only in a few areas).

RECONSTRUCTION PHASE:
Almost one and a half year after the disaster, READ has been actively involved in strengthening, rebuilding and reconstructing the educational infrastructure in the AJK region. READ is currently building schools from the ground up which will allow facilities to be shared across the campus, such as the canteen, administration areas, sporting facilities and outdoor spaces, etc. All these buildings will be constructed to meet current building codes and standards set by the authorities. Fire safety requirements will also be integrated to meet current environmental and sustainable design standards thus amalgamating the infrastructure necessary to provide the latest technologies likely to be used in modern schools.
